Lightning detection is a really neat feature and, as far as I know, unique to WeatherBug. There's also the option to easily share a screenshot of your Spark map with friends. Spark also tells you the distance from the nearest lightning strike, and it gives you advice for what to do in your area. On a clear day in New York, I watched lighting storms rage over the Pacific Ocean, north of Ecuador. Tap this to pull up the Spark Map (which is always available from the hidden left tray) and you see lightning bolt icons appearing at the location of lightning strikes around the world-not just your neighborhood. From the main page, you'll see an alert if there's lightning in your area.

Sparking Spark is WeatherBug's lightning-detection feature, which is deeply integrated into the Android app. While the traffic overlay is useful, I prefer The Weather Channel's trip-radar feature. That's par for the course, but WeatherBug tosses in satellite imagery and traffic data from Google for good measure. This feels a little redundant, and I would like to see the layout simplified and show a quick overview of weather conditions in my saved locations.Ī radar map is accessible only from the left tray, with options to see cloud, storm, wind speed, humidity, pressure, temperature, head index, wind chill, and dew point layers. You can access weather information for different locations either from the dropdown menu at the top of the screen or by tapping the map pin. None of the weather apps I've tested include extensive forecast information, however. However, you will only be able to see this information for today, not forecast data for the future.

Here's where you go to find the current phase of the moon, sunrise time, and sunset time. For instance, this page not only tells you the chance of precipitation but the projected rate at which it will fall. WeatherBug's last page is called Details, and it recaps the day's weather information in much greater, well, detail. It's easily the most info-heavy hourly forecast I've yet seen, but I prefer 1Weather's interactive forecast pages. A list of days along the bottom makes it easy to see hourly forecasts for the whole week. Each section can be expanded to reveal a written forecast as well.Ĭontinuing left is the hourly forecast, which shows the conditions, temperature, and much of the information from the Now page for the next 12 hours. Each entry shows the day, an icon for the predicted conditions, high temperature, low temperature, and chance of precipitation (if any). Swiping left reveals the 10-day forecast. The Now page also has seven customizable shortcuts to tonight's forecast, 10-day forecast, user-submitted photos, the news-heavy Spotlight section, live cameras showing weather conditions, the Spark lighting-detection system, and pollen levels.

Google released a slew of widgets in the lead-up to Android 12’s launch and is now making various functional refinements.

The Material You weather widgets were first introduced with Google app 12.41 and this update is available with the 12.42 beta. It’s now much more practical to use this widget. There’s also the option to shrink down into a 3×1 oval where the items appear side-by-side rather than overlapped. Meanwhile, the diagonal pill can now be expanded horizontally to become a landscape pill that includes high/low in addition to the large temp digits and condition icon. This particular update makes the widget much more info-dense and practical. You can shrink it back down to a square to get just the current temperature and high/low, as well as the current location in the top-right. “More on ” is unfortunately shown at the very bottom. That size (or 5×2) gets you a four-hour forecast and a condition summary, while expanding vertically gives you a two-day overview. The 3×3 widget, which is still named “Weather” and lacks a description, now defaults to 4×2 in the preview page. Google has now updated the widgets with more size configurations and an hourly forecast.
